Parents Questions:

Q: When is the deadline to sign up for the OHVA?

A: The deadline for girls is June 30. The deadline for boys is January 31. You may still send in
your form and money after the deadline with the understanding that it is strictly for an
as needed & first come, first serve basis at that point. If teams are uneven in quantity,
or if someone backs out, we will call any late entries in the order we receive them.
Your money will be refunded if there are not enough empty slots that need to be filled.
Although we recommend and appreciate 7th & 8th grade girls that are trying out for the school teams
to sign up before the June 30 deadline, we accept those registrations until August 15.

Q: My child is no longer able to commit to playing volleyball. Is it too late to get my money back?
A: Refunds cannot be made after the deadlines because much of the

expenses have already been spent or planned by that time. Also, much effort goes into

dividing teams as equally as possible. Anyone dropping out could greatly affect these

results.

Q: What grades does the volleyball program cover?

A: This is for anyone living in the Oak Hills district in grades 3-8.

Q: Do the players need to attend an Oak Hills school?

A: No, they do not have to attend an Oak Hills school, but must live in the district.

Q: Is this the same league as the middle school teams?

A: No, this is totally separate from the school-affiliated sports, and is run and coached

entirely by volunteer parents.

Q: If my daughter makes the middle school team, can she also play in the OHVA?

A: No. The seasons run at the same time so there would be no way to be involved in both.

Q: Should I sign my daughter up for the OHVA just in case she doesn’t make the middle school team?

A: Definitely. Sign up by the posted deadline. If they make the school team, your money will

be refunded.

Q: My daughter made the school team. How do I get my registration money refunded?

A: We work closely with the middle school coaches. They provide us with a list of the students that make their teams.
We try to take care of all refunds around the first week of September.

Q: My daughter did not make the school team. Is it too late to register for the OHVA?

A: No. We always hold off on creating 7th & 8th grade teams for this reason.
Although we recommend and appreciate 7th & 8th grade girls that are trying out for the school teams
to sign up before the June 30 deadline, we accept those registrations until August 15.

Q: Can my child play on their friends team?

A: Not necessarily. We will not purposely put friends on the same team. We try our hardest

to make each team as equal as possible.

Q: What days of the week, what time & what school will practices and games be held?

A: We can’t schedule anything until we know when the gyms will be available. We don't receive
this information until right before the start of each season. Historically, practices have been held
only on Mondays thru Thursdays between 5pm & 9pm. Fridays are used for practices at the request
of the coaches. ALL girls games and boys HOME games are also held during these same times.
However, boys AWAY games are on the weekends. We schedule the younger grades in the earlier
time slots & practices will normally be at or close to your home school. Unfortunately, you will need
to be somewhat flexible on scheduling because of the lack of available gym time for our league.

Q: When does the season run?

A: 3rd through 6th grade girls teams usually start practicing the same week that school starts.

7th & 8th grade girls teams usually start the week after school starts because we need that extra

week to prepare once the middle school teams are selected. The girls regular season runs through
the end of October, with tournaments usually taking place the first week of November.
Boys teams start practicing in early March. The boys regular season runs through early May,
with tournaments usually taking place in mid May.

Q: My child has another sport activity on a certain days. Can they miss volleyball on those days?

A: We understand that other sports will conflict. However, we ask that you give both

activities equal opportunity. Miss a little of each sport rather than missing a lot of one

sport. All sports are team activities and it is not fair to the rest of the team to miss so

many practices. It is up to each coach as to whether they choose to provide less game time

to kids that miss a lot of practices.

Q: I wouldn’t mind coaching my child’s team but I don’t know anything about volleyball?

A: Although we have noticed that the coaches that have played in high school or club teams

provide the best instruction, we realize that there aren’t enough of those volunteers to

cover our needs. We try to help the less experienced coaches by holding coaches training

clinics and/or by involving recent high school players as assistants if possible. We always

include a booklet of drills for your use at practices.

Q: What special clothing do I need to supply for my child?

A: We will provide team shirts. You will need to supply kneepads, which are required to

practice & play in games. Special shoes are not necessary.

Coaches Questions:

Q: If I can’t make a practice night, can I reschedule?

A: No, we don’t reschedule individual practices. Rescheduling often leads to

miscommunications between OHVA, schools, & custodians.  Your assistant should be able to

run the practice, even if it is just formatted as a simple, yet effective scrimmage game.

 Q: If I can’t make a game night, can I reschedule?

A: Only if it is rescheduled on the same night and location, swapped with a different time

slot. This, however, takes much effort since there would then be 4 coaches schedules to

satisfy, and they, most likely, would need to call all of their players to assure the new time

slot wouldn’t adversely affect their participation level. Rescheduling to a different day

leaves a ref with an open, unpaid time slot, and requires another ref to be scheduled for a

standalone single game slot. Not to mention the game preparation by the school for that new

time. Your only other option is to have your assistant run the game, or forfeit.

Q: If the school needs to cancel, will the practices or games be rescheduled?

A: Yes.

Q: If there is a school function affecting team attendance, can we be rescheduled?

A: We try to avoid having games on nights that also have other school functions, based on

the district calendar publication. If the school function brings your player quantity below

five, then we will work with you to reschedule the practices or games.

Q: What do I do if the school doors are locked when we arrive for a practice or game?

A: Walk around the entire school looking for an open door or a custodian inside. Be sure to

have the phone number of our scheduling person. There may be a chance that they can make

a phone call to school personnel to get it opened. If this all fails, we will reschedule.

Q: After a match, who do I notify of the results?
A: Coaches don’t need to do anything until the end of the regular season. Immediately after

your last regular season game, contact the league president by phone or e-mail with how

many games you WON & LOST. A sheet is provided in your folder to keep track of this info

throughout the season. Actual scores are not needed.

Q: What is used to determine tournament standings?

A: Tournaments are based on number of MATCHES won.

First level tie breaker is based on number of GAMES won.

Second level tie breaker is based on number of games won from matches involving the tied teams.
